Police sniff out drug cash hidden in cheese

cash2Even the most pungent cheeses couldn’t throw police in the American state of Nebraska off the scent of $1.2 million in drug money.

A police sniffer dog team unearthed the stack of cash after stopping a truck in Douglas County for a minor traffic violation.

Chief Deputy Marty Bilek said officers checked the trailer after thinking something didn’t smell quite right about two people inside the vehicle.

“There was about $1.2 million hidden in the back of the truck,” he said, according to Nebraska Radio. “The truck was otherwise loaded with pallets of exotic cheeses.”

Bilek gave no further details about the types of cheese involved or the fate of the legitimate cargo. He said the occupants of the truck, former drug gang members with ties to El Salvador, were not arrested.

“This is our third money seizure in the last seven days. The first one was for £320,000. The second one was for $100,000 and this one for $1.2 million,” he added.
