Let’s roll: Cheese chase champ to ignore ban

A six-times champion of England’s annual cheese-rolling contest has vowed to chase the cheese despite a ban on the event because of safety concerns.cheeseroll

Chris Anderson says he is willing to risk potential injury to complete an unauthorised cheese roll in May if a campaign to reinstate the 200-year-old Gloucestershire tradition fails.

“Cheese rolling has always taken part since I was young and I just want it to keep going,” Anderson told thisisgloucestershire.co.uk.

“There are hundreds of members on Facebook that say they will be going and there is a rugby team that have said they will be catchers at the bottom of the hill.”

“The lady that makes the cheeses said we can have one, and on May 31 I will be going up there and doing it whatever happens.”

The event, held every year on the steep grassy slopes of Cooper’s Hill, sees dozens of contestants race after seven pound wheel of double gloucester cheese. The winner of a series of races gets to keep it.

Injuries are commonplace. Last year 58 people — 35 competitors, four catchers at the bottom of the hill and 19 spectators — were hurt, 11 of whom were taken to hospital.

A Facebook group dedicated to reinstating the event has now gathered more than 6,000 signatures.
